It is located some 30 km from the Chinese border. It is the second largest city in the Russian Far East, after Vladivostok . The city became the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia in 2002. Population: 579,000 (2005 estimate), 583,072 (2002 Census). The area was originally part of Imperial China and was called Boli. The Chinese hamlet dates back to the 12th century. In the 1858, the area was ceded to Russia under the Treaty of Aigun. The Russians renamed the hamlet as Khabarovsk after a Russian explorer Yerofey Khabarov, and established military observation post and which later became an important industrial centre for the region.
The Rotary Club of Khabarovsk was chartered in April, 1995. There are 26 active and 2 honorary members in the Club now. Khabarovsk Club maintains friendly relationships with Rotary Clubs all over the world. The Club leads an active life, develops various projects with RCs from other countries (theU.S., Japan, Belgium) aimed at improving people’s life in its community. Khabarovsk Club encourages business people, meduim and large enterprises and the local authorities to turn to the people who need their help and support.
There are also Rotaract and Interact Clubs in Khabarovsk . Khabarovsk Rotaract Club members take an active part in projects launched by Khabarovsk Rotary Club, whereas the latter in its turn actively supports the Rotaractors’ initiatives . In 2005 the Rotary Club of Khabarovsk celebrated its 10th Anniversary.
