MAP OF NERUNGRI

A few words about the Rotary Club of Nerungri.

Our club is situated in City of Nerungri in Yakutia Republic the Northern Republic of Russia, in the winter the temperature drops down to minus 50 degree of Celsius scale. Nerungri Rotary club was created on initiative of Leslie Corvolla the volunteer form Frenbesk and Maria Chernetsova. Chater presenting ceremony took place in April of 1999.  The first president was Nikolay Ribalov, secretary – Natalia Rostovetskaya (Natalia Silina now). There is only one member left of the first 25, she is Natalia Silina. The club provided handicap children with 10 sidecars – it was the first club project.  Since then, the club started to work with children houses and other organizations.  Right now the rumor and speech rehabilitation centre “SUVAG” needs our help; this centre teaches and cures deaf children.

From Nerungri Educational Web Site. Our town is situated in the South of Yakutia, in the northern part of Russia. The history of Nerungri goes back to November 6, 1975. On that day, the foundation of the first wooden house was laid. The reason for its founding was that a great coal field had been discovered in this region by the Soviet geologists. Previously, there was only wild taiga growing on the permafrost here, with only the Evenks, a native tribe living deep in the taiga and breeding reindeer.
The building of the new town was declared a Komsomol project, and many young people from all republics of the former Soviet Union came here to dig the coal pit and to start the new town. The first workers lived in tents but later on, the first wooden houses were erected. Now there are big districts with modern 9-storeyed and 12-story houses, all having modern conveniences. There are 20 secondary schools here, the Regional Museum of Local Culture, a great modern Center of Culture, the Puppet theater, several stadiums, a modern airport, a large railway station, many shops, cafes and restaurants. The population of the town is about 100,000, and includes people of 80 nationalities.
Nerungri is an industrial town, which is focused arounnd a large coal pit, the main industry in the region, and is of great importance for our republic. Coal from Nerungri is shipped to many regions of Russia and exported to countries such as Korea and Japan. There is also a large coal processing plant here, a mechanical repair plantas well as some other enterprises.
The young people who graduate from the secondary schools have many opportunities to continue their education. We have a branch of Yakut State University, an industrial college, a pedagogical college, a medical school as well as many branches of universities, institutes and academies from other cities in Russia.
Nature is quite beautiful here, with the town being surrounded by the ever-present taiga, as well as being close to many rivers and lakes. In addition, there is a great variety of wildlife in the region.
